Who is akinika?

akinika is a leading UK debt collection agency, based in Preston, Lancashire. Originally established in 1926 akinika is Authorised and Regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority for accounts formed under the Consumer Credit Act 1974 (amended 2006). We specialise in consumer and commercial debt collection and act on behalf of a number of public and private sector clients. Our role is to responsibly engage with our clients' customers to resolve financial issues and outstanding balances. We are a debt collector, not a debt buyer and collect debt on behalf of our clients.

We are a member of the Credit Services Association (CSA), the trade body for the debt collection industry. The CSA supports its members to ensure that they put customers at the heart of everything they do and adhere to its robust Code of Practice, developed in partnership with The Office of Fair Trading.

We are proud and active members of the CSA and regularly ensure that we are meeting or exceeding the codes and standards expected of us.

Why has akinika contacted me?

If we have contacted you it’s because an outstanding balance in your name has been passed on to us to collect. This will follow attempts from the original creditor to contact you and seek payment.

If you fail to make payment and we receive your account details from that creditor we will attempt to contact you by telephone and/or letter to confirm that all of that information is correct. Our priority is to then work with you to understand your personal circumstances and find an affordable, flexible way of resolving the outstanding balance.

Has akinika purchased my debt?

No; akinika is not a debt buyer and has not purchased your debt. akinika is a leading UK debt collection agency, recovering debt on behalf of a wide range of private and public sector clients.

Why won't you speak to me on the telephone unless I have answered identification questions?

akinika is registered with the Information Commissioners Office for the purposes of Data Protection. It is important that we confirm that we are talking to you, the account holder, before discussing your personal and private details over the phone. We understand that you may be wary about confirming details on a call, but whilst our staff will clearly identify where they are calling from, unfortunately we cannot confirm why akinika is calling until identification questions have been satisfactorily answered.

Can I pay by instalments?

Yes; Please call a member of our team on 01772 557635 who will review your account details based on your circumstances and current financial commitments, to agree a suitable repayment plan. Alternatively, use the "Want to agree a repayment plan?" link opposite.

Can I mange a settlement offer?

Yes; Please call a member of our team on 01772 557635 to discuss the possibility of a short-settlement on your particular account. This option is available only on some debt types with some creditors and must be approved by akinika prior to you making a payment.

You should be aware that if you agree and pay a reduced amount to settle your debt it will be shown on your credit file ( if relevant ) as satisfied with a partially settled flag, rather than paid in full.

What if there is an unresolved dispute on my account with my creditor, but now akinika are involved?

We will work really hard for you to get any issues resolved and if you feel that there is an unresolved creditor issue or a dispute and your account should not have been passed to akinika - just contact us by phone or in writing to tell us why and we will investigate with your creditor and keep you informed.

What happens if I don't want to deal with akinika?

It is your creditor's choice to pass your account to akinika and they are entitled to do so legally and in line with your original contract with them. We will work really hard for you to get any issues resolved and if you feel that there is an unresolved creditor issue or a dispute and your account should not have been passed to akinika - just contact us by phone or in writing to tell us why and we will investigate with your creditor and keep you informed.

Can I authorise a 3rd party advisor to act on my behalf?

Yes; if you would prefer a 3rd party advisor or even a friend or relative to act on your behalf when discussing your account with akinika, you will need to send us a signed written authority. Alternatively, we can accept your authority over the telephone once you have successfully answered identification questions. All authorised parties will then be required to complete similar identity checks on subsequent calls. Additional security in the form of a password can be set up if preferred. We always recommend using one of the many free help and advice organisations available in the UK, rather than the fee charging debt management sector - see the Independent Help link opposite.

I've asked a money advisor to deal with my debts so what should I do about your correspondence?

Please pass our correspondence to your advisor who can then contact us to agree an affordable repayment plan based on your circumstances. We always recommend the use of the free debt help sector, details of which can be found in the "Independent Help" link opposite.

What do I do if I am seriously ill or suffering from mental health issues?

We do not wish to cause unnecessary stress to anyone, especially those who may be suffering from illness or mental health problems. Please call us on 01772 557635 to let us know and we will do all we can to be sensitive and sympathetic to your situation. Alternatively and with your permission, we may be able to deal with someone else acting on your behalf. We accept the Debt and Mental Health Evidence Form from the Money Advice Liaison Group which is specifically designed to help those with mental health problems when dealing with debt matters.
